E-Learning Facilities For Tertiary Institutions To Benefit From Government Through Investment
President Akufo-Addo in a meeting with universities vice-chancellors. He announced the introduction of a learning management system to facilitate e-learning in all tertiary institutions throughout the country.
He explained that the system is to enhance electronic interactions and enable the government to have a proper assessment of the effectiveness of online interactions amid the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
The President said this at Jubilee House yesterday in an encounter with vice-chancellors of the various universities across the country. Also for them to discuss some relevant matters ahead of June 15 reopening of universities.
President Akufo-Addo indicated that the system will not be used at the high school level. He gave reasons that it will be challenging to go by the instructions of that level
“Part of the problem with the senior high school is that it is very difficult to know to what extent the instruction. First of all, is being paid attention to, if they are actually listening…” He said and added that the imbalances in the absorptive capacities of students at that level will be difficult to address. This happens if online learning is introduced in the high schools.
He added that the learning management system for tertiary institutions will be critical. Which will be for e-learning and specified that the government will soon put the system in place.
Also, commenting on the Monday, June 15 school reopening. Akufo-Addo gave an assurance that the government will ensure that PPE’s are made available. Also the tertiary institutions are disinfected for a conducive environment suitable for teaching and learning.
Akufo-Addo furthered that financial clearance has been given for the recruitment of over 6,000 staff to address capacity restriction in the universities.
Moreover, in terms of modern learning, he said the idea of open universities has found favor with the government. Again he indicated that active measures are being put in place. It’s to ensure that universities offer quality distance learning that the open universities represent.
President Akufo-Addo was confident that the reopening of schools at the tertiary level in the wake of the COVID-19 risk will serve as a good example for the country.
“If it succeeds, then the country will be reassured that we can begin to step up with confidence to the future that comes ahead of us,” he stated.
The Minister for Education, Mathew Opoku Prempeh. He added that Ghana has done well in its management of the coronavirus outbreak in the country. He admitted that even though Ghana’s numbers rises. Most of the cases are normal people who have been infected and have not shown any signs of the disease.
The Education Minister said it’s necessary to look at the COVID-19 data. Also, it saves life because the pandemic has been well managed in the country.
However, NAPO urged the citizenry to “act with safety precautions in mind”. As well as observing the preventive protocols suggested by the Ghana Health Service.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana and Chairman of Vice-Chancellors Ghana, Prof Ebenezer Oduro. He applauded President Akufo-Addo for the great leadership he has demonstrated since the outbreak of the pandemic.
He assured that all the universities are going to open on Monday despite media reports claiming that some universities have decided not to open even after the President’s directives for them to reopen.
