2020 NSMQ: Stage Set For Semi-Finals Contests For This Year’s NSMQ
The stage is now set for the semi finals contests of this year’s National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) tomorrow, Tuesday, October 6, 2020.
However, this is after nine schools emerged victorious during the quarter final contests of the competition. Held from last Friday, October 2, 2020 to Sunday, October 5, 2020.
The schools are: Accra Academy (Accra Aca), Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS). Boa Amponsem SHS, Achimota School, Keta Senior High Technical School (SHTS). Adisadel College, Kumasi Academy, Aburi Presbyterian SHTS and the Presbyterian Boys School, Legon (Presec).
First semi-final
In the first semi finals contest on Tuesday, giant killers, Accra Aca, which eliminated the defending champions, St. Augustine’s College, would come face to face with the Keta SHSTS and Boa Amponsem SHS.
Before reaching the semi finals, Keta SHS (36 points) eliminated the Navrongo SHS (26 points) and Pope John’s Seminary (13 points). Boa Amponsem SHS which earned 29 points in the quarter finals contest accounted for the exit of St Margaret Mary’s SHS, 24 points, and the Ghana Secondary Technical Schools (GSTS), 14 points.
Earlier on Friday, Accra Aca shocked defending champions, St. Augustine’s College, and the Kumasi Secondary Technical School (KSTS). At the end of the contest, Accra Aca had 53 points, St. Augustine’s, 50 points, and KSTS, 38 points.
For their part, OWASS, accounted for the exit of two Cape Coast girls schools — Wesley Girls’ SHS and the Holy Child College to reach the semi final stage. OWASS had 49 points while Wey Gey Hey had 37 and Holy Child, 32 points.
Second semi-final
The second semi-finals contest promises to be an interesting one as Achimota School lock horns with Keta SHTS and Adisadel College.
The 1998 and 2004 champions, Achimota School, beat four-time champions, Prempeh College, and the Anglican SHS. At the end of the contest, Achimota had 44 points, Prempeh, 41 and Anglican SHS, 27 points.
One-time champions, Adisadel College, silenced three-time champions St. Peter’s SHS and Ola SHS to reach the semi-final stage. It had 49 points, Se Peter’s, 47 points and Ola SHS, 39 points.
Third semi-final
Kumasi Academy would face Aburi Presbyterian SHTS and the Presbyterian Boys School, Legon.
Kumasi Academy qualified for the semi-finals slot by beating the Armed Forces Senior High Technical School (AFSHTS) and Apam Senior High School (ASHS) respectively. All had 47, 33 and 25 points in that order.
The Aburi Presbyterian SHTS eliminated the Osino Presbyterian SHTS and Northern School of Business. At the end of the final round, Aburi SHTS secured 37 points, Osino Presby. 35 points and the Northern School of Business, 14 points.
Presec, Legon qualified for the last slot of the semi finals contest after defeating the Ghana National College and the Koforidual Secondary Technical School. Presec, Legon recorded 51 points while the Koforidual Sec Tech had 42 points and Ghana National College, 42 points.
