D.K Poison To Be Paid $45k Government Borrowed From Him In 1976
An amount of 45,000 USD has been approved by President Nana Akufo Addo. To be paid to Ghana’s first ever world boxing champion, David Kotei, aka D.K Poison.
This comes after D.K Poison and his lawyers sent a petition to the Presidency in September of 2019. Asking for him to be paid 45,000 USD which the state took as a loan over 40 years ago.
After he won his second title defense against Shigefumi Fukuyama in Japan in 1976. D.K poison was asked by the Military government led by General Kutu Acheampong. To give his fight money as a loan to help the state purchase mackerel during an economic crisis.
The boxing legend has since tried with no avail to collect his money back from various governments.
In a letter signed by the president’s secretary, Nana Asante Bediatuo. The finance has been directed to make sure the money to the now 65-year-old legend.
“I write to convey the approval of the President of the Republic for an amount of forty-five Thousand United States Dollars (US$ 45,000) to be paid to Mr. David Kotei (a.k.a DK Poison) on compassionate grounds. By a copy of this letter, the Ministry of Finance is requested to take the necessary action to give effect to this directive,” the letter said.
