GRAND FINALE: 2020 EDITION OF THE NATIONAL SCIENCE AND MATHS QUIZ
The National Science and Maths Quiz seeks to promote the study of science and mathematics among students at the senior high school level.
The 2019 edition the prestigious high school competition was won by St. Augustine’s College after they defeated defending champions, St. Peter’s SHS and Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School, Legon.
The 2020 edition which kicked start on the 28th September has been a trilling one and intriguing as the behemoth of schools are shown the exit by schools tagged as the ‘under dogs. As it is always said, “A journey of thousand miles ends with a last step”. This year’s journey which started with eighty-one schools from one-eighth stage saw Opoku Ware School, Adisadel College and Presec, Legon.
Opoku Ware School (OWASS) sailed through the quarter-finals after beating Wesley Girls SHS and Holy Child School with 49 points.
The first contest at the NSMQ 2020 Semifinal Stage featured two-time NSMQ Champions, Opoku Ware School (1997, 2002), Accra Academy and Boa Amponsam SHS, with Opoku Ware School securing the first slot to the Finals with 55 points.
The one-time champion, Adisadel College gave an impressive performance at the quarter-final stage, in a contest featuring the NSMQ heavyweight Champions, St. Peter’s SHS and Ola Girls SHS, Ho where the ‘Santas’ finished the “It is finished” boys a with two-point difference.
Adisadel College beat two-time champions Achimota Senior High School and Keta Senior High Technical School in second semi-final contest at the National Science and Maths Quiz on Tuesday, October 6. Adisadel College won with 21 points in this fierce battle.
The Greater Accra Region side had high hopes of making it to the finals but lost with a one-point difference.
The Santaclausians will be making a fifth appearance in the final in six years.
They will be chasing their second trophy after they narrowly advanced to the Grande Finale by a point.
Presec, Legon is gunning for its sixth National Science and Maths Quiz trophy after leaving the semi-finals of the competition with a landslide victory.
The ‘Odadie’ boys have been waiting to make the sixth trophy a reality since 2009. The Blue Magicians are the 2020 Greater Accra NSMQ Regional Champions, so literally they have secured their five and half trophy. They hope to celebrate “6”.
Their dream was short-lived in 2019 when St Augustine’s answered the tie breaker riddle in round five kicking them to second place.
So, in 2020, Presec – Legon had come with all their best ammunition including super-sub Isaac Kofi Gyamfi, Benjamin Quansah Nketsiah and Gakpetor Daniel Kekeli.
Presec, Legon after an impressive performance last year has managed to secure a spot in the Grand Finale this year.
As one of the schools expected to make it to the finale of the NSMQ this year, the boys of Presec, Legon did not disappoint their supporters when they sailed easily to take the last spot left with 66 points.
They began their reign in Round One when they finished with 26 points while their competitors Kumasi Academy and Aburi Presby SHTS had 11 and 08 points respectively.
Infact, Presec Legon gave Kumaca and Aburi Presby SHTS a socially distant defeat.
The gap widens when Presec had a perfect score in the “Problem of the Day” bagging home the Prudential Life NSMQ Star.
After answering two riddles correctly in the fifth and final round Presec’ scores came up to 66 points securing them a place in the finals, Also, they took home the airteltigoghana Highest Scorer of the Day award.
After a thrilling display, PRESEC – Legon shows us why they are five-time Champions.
The three teams had first met in 2019 at the semi-final where ‘The Blues’ won with 48points.
