NUGS Holds 54th Annual Congress To Elect New Executives
Barring any last-minute changes, all is set for the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to hold its 54th Annual Non-Residential Congress where it is expected that student leaders from higher learning institutions will elect a new crop of executives to steer the affairs of the student union.
The Congress will take place at the Madina Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) near Lakeside Estate in Accra and will be under the theme “Student Leadership In the Midst of Covid – 19 Pandemic – Taking Stock of Our Progress, Looking Into The Future”.
Per Article 16 Clause (b) (i) of the NUGS Constitution, the President, General Secretary, Secretary for Education, Secretary for Finance, Secretary for International Relations, Secretary for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Skills Development, Secretary for Union Development, Secretary for Women Development and Secretary for Societies and Welfare who shall be National Executive Officers (NEO) of the student union shall be elected at the Union’s Annual Residential Congress.
This year’s elections will see a total of eighteen (18) qualified aspirants vie for the various portfolios of the student union in their quest to take over the mantle of leadership.
Whiles some portfolios including Secretary for Union Development and Secretary for Societies and Welfare have aspirants going unopposed, the other aspirants for the other portfolios have at least one(1) aspirant to compete with.
For key followers of NUGS and student politics, the supreme battle lies in the presidential race as two-time NUGS presidential aspirant Emmanuel Boakye Yiadom (Y.B) comes up against first-timers Dennis Appiah Larbi and Dr. Sylvester Owusu Amoako.
