Public Colleges of Education in the country are threatening to shut down because there is no cash to purchase food items since Akufo-Addo announced for schools to reopen in January, a source has hinted.

The Colleges of Education closure the source told Educationweb.com.gh is due to the non-payment of feeding grant by the government to the schools.

“Part of the teacher trainee allowance is used for cooking food for students after the government restored trainee allowances,” a College teacher who spoke on condition of anonymity told EducationWeb’s Okyere Darko.

The College of Education Weekly Journal confirming the pending closure said “Colleges of Education are likely to close down in the coming weeks.”

According to the Journal, most Colleges of Education (CoE’s) are also highly indebted to suppliers as a result of the non-payment of the feeding funds.

An Education economist commenting on the developing story quizzed “So because of food, you will shut down an institution of higher learning?”

The Executive Director of EduWatch Mr. Kofi Asare also asked that “Where in this World is it best practice for tertiary students to be fed by the state when some basic school students learn under trees and on the floor?”
