The recent developments in the the confirmation process of MMCE/DCEs in the various Municipalities and Districts of our country Ghana leaves so many questions begging for answers. The president executed his constitutional mandate
in consonance with the 1992 constitution of Ghana (article 146) that, president shall appoint MMDCE’s who shall be Ghana confirmed by assembly members of the locality. I say bravo, Mr. President! I nonetheless have problem with your delay in executing this constitutional mandate.
Going forward, the president through the Ministry for Local Government and Rural Development communicated to the general public the president’s nominees.
The announcement of the government’s nominees witnesses mixed feelings among the government’s party faithful. Agitations, hooliganisms and melees were characterized the masses in various constituencies.
Some nominees were swiftly and massively endorsed by the assembly members whiles others couldn’t meet the two third requirement of the general assembly; obviously their fates were to be decided by subsequent scheduled elections.
The confirmation process of the MCE for BIBIANI-ANHWIASO-BEKWAI, Hon Alfred Amoah, leaves a lot of questions begging for answers as he was approved by only 19 members of the assembly out of the 52 assemble members without the Presiding Member whose mandate is to chair every program that goes on in the assembly.
The 19 members of the assembly who confirmed Hon Alfred Amoah to the two chair 100% confirmation comprised: 16 elected Assembly Members and 3 government appointees of the assembly.
In 2020, the confirmation process of Mr. Benjamin Kesse,
who happened to be the constituency secretary was appointed to take over from Hon Gilbert?
Assembly Members who were tagged as members of the National Democratic Congress were denied to participate in the confirmation process of Mr. Benjamin Kesse which was totally unlawful. The president who touted himself as a man of the rule of law sat comfortably without calling the presiding officer to order. Barely a year down the line, such cases have raised their ugly heads. Mr. President, the country’s principles of democracy are retrogressing under your watch. Your actions or inactions are setting bad precedent for tomorrow. It is high time you woke up and ensure orderliness is achieved.
Ghana is a democratic country and it ought to be governed as such. Your recent visit to Guinea as the ECOWAS president was for the military to reinstate Alpha Conde because it is deemed that steps taken by the junta were unconstitutional. Mr. President, are the current happenings in this country constitutional?
Are they different from the developments in Guinea? Let the true will of the assembly members prevail.
