Students Between Age 9-13yrs Should Be Exempt From Writing BECE – Educationist

A staff of the University of Ghana, Prof. Joseph Osafo has urged the non-profit-making organization (WAEC) responsible for the conduct of national exams to exclude students between the ages of 9 to 13 from writing BECE

The Head of Psychology at the University of Ghana (UG) speaking on Peace 104. FM’s Kokrokoo show monitored by Educationweb.com.gh said students between the ages of 9 to 13 years writing BECE affects their mental health.

According to him, such prospective candidates don’t have the emotional capacity to manage the shocks or anxiety that comes with the writing of an examination, particularly national examinations like the forthcoming BECE for School.

The Educationist consequently has called on the Management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to note that ‘the integrity of our examination affects the integrity of the mental health of our children.”

This Professor Joseph Osafo said is because the majority of school children who fail the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) administered by the non-profit-making organization (WAEC) become suicidal.

“The argument should be how best can we make sure that a child between the ages of 9 to 13 years doesn’t fail JHS exams. This picture of failing and writing and failing, at that stage, I think it is too much,” he told Kwame Sefa kayi.

The 31st edition of the national examination has been scheduled to be conducted from Monday, November 15, 2021, to Friday, November 19, 2021. A total of 571,894 candidates are expected to sit for the 2021 BECE at 2,158 centres.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed its best wishes to the final year Junior High School students and urged them to desist from examination malpractice that could lead to the cancellation of their entire subject results.

The Service has also admonished individuals including supervisors and invigilators who will be associated with the administration of the national examination to adhere strictly to the Covid-19 protocols at all examination centres.
