Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has been named assistant coach of Ghana’s U-17 men’s team, Black Starlets.

Kingston, who scored six goals in 42 appearances for the Black Stars, will assist Karim Zito. The 42-year-old is the team’s first assistant coach, with Jacob Nettey appointed second assistant coach by the Ghana Football Association (GFA)

Jerry Asare will be the goalkeeper’s trainer.

“The new technical team has been tasked to assemble a formidable squad for the next edition of the WAFU B U-17 Cup of Nations and the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations,” part of the statement on the GFA website read.

Zito has a wealth of experience in youth football. He won the Africa Cup of Nations with the Black Satellites U-20 team last year in Mauritania.

This is Laryea’s first major job since he began coaching. The former midfielder stated earlier this year that his dream is to coach Ghana and win the World Cup.

Kingston was speaking about his difficult experience of missing the 2006 and 2010 World Cup tournaments despite playing an important role in the qualifiers.

“Yes it is past now, now we have to move and think forward, it was disappointing I never got the opportunity to play at the World Cup,” he said on GHOne TV.

“Hopefully, I could coach the team and win the World Cup someday,” he said.

Nettey is a former Hearts of Oak captain who led them to the famous CAF Champions League glory in 2000
