Election Watch Ghana accuses RTI Commission of lack of transparency and accountability
A pressure group Election Watch Ghana is accusing the Right to Information (RTI) Commission of lack of transparency and accountability despite acknowledging its rights in demanding the whereabouts of some missing BVRs from the Electoral Commission of Ghana.
Election Watch Ghana contends that the RTI Commission has been dragging its feet and seems to be conniving with the Electoral Commission in the demands for the missing kits.
At a press conference at the UDS Guest House in Accra on Friday, June 21, The lead Convenor, Mr.Mark Ewusi Arkoh said, “Despite our tireless efforts to uncover the truth these institutions have chosen to shield the truth and perpetuate a cover – up.
“We have repeatedly requested the serial numbers of the BVR kits, but the Electoral Commission has refused to provide them.
The RTI Commission tasked with ensuring transparency has been dragging its feet, citing excuses and stalling tactics. We were assured a final decision will be made on Monday 2nd June , 2024 but until today, we are still being met.
” We are fed up with the lack of transparency and accountability in our country, We are fed up with institutions that serve the interests of those in power rather than the people.
Election Watch Ghana is calling on notable pressure group Let My Votes Count Alliance to support us in this struggle for transparency and accountability:
” We demand immediate action”
The pressure group said they will not relent in their demands for accountability from the Electoral Commission.
“We will pursue charges of misuse of office, abuse of authority, and causing financial loss to the state. We will not stand idly by as their actions cause fear and panic to every stakeholder. We will take our message to the people, meeting them in market places, trotros, churches, school. and everywhere.
“After mobilizing the people , we will be seeing the Speaker of Parliament to demand action on the conduct of these two state institutions”,
After the Electoral Commission (EC) reported of some missing BVRs, Election Watch Ghana have been demanding serial numbers of the devices.
They also wanted to have a list of the serial numbers of the devices used for the recent limited voter registration.
The Electoral Commission however, rejected these demands insisting that its processes are transparent
We promise to hold the Electoral Commission accountable for their actions, We will pursue charges of misuse of office, abuse of authority, and causing financial loss to the state.
We will not be deterred, We will continue to fight for the truth and for the protection of our votes.
