Discover the gripping tale of ‘Women of Owu’.
The Theatre Arts Department of the University of Education, Winneba, has been a significant force in the Ghanaian arts scene. It has not only provided the university community and the people of Winneba with an alternative entertainment option but has also grown to rival the prestigious School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, Legon.
For over ten years, the department has produced captivating and didactic plays, dance productions, and events. These productions are often led by lecturers and final-year students, showcasing a blend of academic mentorship and student creativity.
This year, from 18th to 20th July 2024, the department will present a highly anticipated production, “Women of Owu.” Written by Nigerian playwright Femi Osofisan, this play explores the aftermath of the 19th-century war-torn Owu Kingdom. It delves into the pain, depression, and agony of the survivors, who are solely women, after the men of the kingdom were killed by the combined forces of Ife, Oyo, and Ijebu.
The production is directed by Joyce Boahene Bonsu, a final-year student of the department. Her ability to lead a team of over 30 cast and crew members, predominantly students, highlights the soft skills and leadership qualities that theatre students acquire during their training.
“Women of Owu” is particularly relevant in the current political climate, as the country approaches an election year. The play serves as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of war, encouraging audiences to reflect on the importance of peace and unity.
I’ve already secured my ticket for this powerful production. I hope you’ve got yours too! See you at the SCA Theatre at the University of Education, Winneba, from Thursday, 18th July 2024 to Saturday, 20th July 2024.
