Next NDC government will remove distortions in Ghana’s history and restore Nkrumah to his rightful place – Mahama
Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to focus on completing Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s economic vision for Ghana and Africa, rather than distorting his legacy.
Speaking at an event to mark Nkrumah’s 115th birthday at Nkroful, Mahama emphasized that Nkrumah’s economic ideas, once ahead of their time, are now being embraced globally, especially in Europe.
Mr Mahama reiterated his commitment to restoring and correcting the misrepresentation of Nkrumah’s legacy should he be elected in 2025.
He noted that the former president’s contributions to both Ghana and the African continent as a whole are deserving of respect and recognition.
The NDC flagbearer expressed disappointment that Nkrumah’s work has been disrespected and distorted in recent times.
He emphasised that Nkrumah’s economic vision remains relevant and critical to Ghana’s future, and called for efforts to be made to advance his ideas for the country’s development.
The former President thus urged Ghanaians to honour Nkrumah’s legacy by working toward fulfilling the economic blueprint he laid out, which aimed at Ghana’s self-reliance and pan-African unity.
“Today we are reminded with deep sadness that the work Nkrumah started is not completed. The future Nkrumah envisioned, a prosperous, united Africa free from exploitation, still calls progressives across this continent to action. The liberation struggle is not over yet, but the question is, what happened? What or who truncated the vision and set us back this way?”
“Before we can fully embrace the vision of Osagyefo, we must first dispel the divisive and needless debates that have recently intensified to try to obliterate his legacy.”
“The next NDC government will seek to remove the distortions in our history and restore Kwame Nkrumah to his rightful place in the history of Ghana. To celebrate this great man, the next NDC government will recognize this festival with the title ‘The Journey to Nkroful’ as one of the official events on Ghana’s tourism calendar. This festival will become a pan-African pilgrimage for progressives from all over the world to visit the birthplace of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.”
