Mahama assures eliminating trade barriers between Ghana and Mali

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his commitment to eliminating obstacles that impede the seamless transportation of goods between Ghana and Mali.
He underscored the need for stronger trade relations and economic cooperation between the two nations despite Mali’s exit from the ECOWAS.
Speaking after a close-door meeting with President of the Transition of Mali, Assmi Goita as part of his ‘Good Neighborliness’ tour, President Mahama stressed the importance of addressing trade barriers that hinder cross-border trade, reassuring his dedication to fostering a more efficient and mutually beneficial transit trade system.

“We know that for a very long time our countries trade amongst each other, our people travel freely amongst each other,” he stated.
“And we also have a transit corridor. A lot of long-distance drivers, both Malian and Ghanaians convey goods from our ports to Mali and transport goods from Mali back to our port for export and so, we discussed how we can remove the challenges so that it’s easy for these drivers who are involved in the transit of goods to be able to do their work without any problems,” he added.
President Mahama begun his ‘good neighborliness’ tour on March 8, 2025 and was welcome at the Modiba Keita Airport in Bamako by the Transitional President, General Assmi Goita, from where they held a close-door meeting in the Presidential Palace.
Meanwhile, both heads of states also discussed defense cooperation in fighting against terrorism and the revival discussions of the Permanent Joint Commission of Cooperation (PJCC) for mutual benefit.
